SAM'S CLUB INNOVATION JAM

Situation

This was a collaboration between UNT Frisco's Project Design and Analysis Cohort 2 and Jonathan Saffian, Senior Product Manager at Sam's Club Innovation Lab. Using finalist submissions for the 2020 and 2021 Sam's Club Innovation Jam, students crafted new innovations for the Sam's Club company based on those submissions.

 

Time Frame

This project was done over the course of a roughly 5 week time period

Task​​

  • Analyze Sam's Plan-Easy Submission

  • Reverse Engineer Their Solution to Find a New Problem Statement

  • Craft Our Own Solution

  • Final Presentation and Reflection

 

Action

​ I spent most of my time empathizing with the customers when cycling through possible solutions. I had to think of how someone would actually use our product and how that would provide them with a better experience. To support my thoughts, I crafted several storyboards to use in the presentations that my group showed to our stakeholders.

 

Results

Since we did not go past the ideation phase, we do not have any quantifiable results of what would happen if our idea was implemented. That being said, this was a great learning opportunity for me as I got to experience what it would be like to be a UX designer and use design thinking within a large corporate company.

SAM'S CLUB Rapid Ideation:Wine

Situation

My team and I were tasked with creating “the Next Big Idea” for the Wine Department. Of the forty-two ideas. I came up with, seven were chosen by my group to review internally and two were picked to present to the Director of Innovation at Sam’s Club, Jonathan Saffian .

 

Tasks

  • 13 Online Survey Responses

  • Created 7 Who, What Wow statements

  • Lead Stakeholder Map Exercise

  • Found 4 major pain points within the wine shopping experience

    • Lack of educated employees

    • Decision fatigue due to too many options

    • Costumers lack confidence in their wine knowledge

    • Customers find the description on the wine bottle to be overly complicated

 

Actions

  • Used Journey Map to evaluate pain points

  • Conducted weekly 30-minute meetings to generate and evaluate ideas

  • Researched other industries to find points of innovation

 

Results

  • My teammates liked my ideas, but all agreed that they could be expanded upon

  • Johnathan liked my two ideas, but he found both unfavorable for Sam’s Club

  • If I were to continue this, I would focus on getting more customer validation through surveys and interviews

ReBalancing the Balanced Score Card For Improving.

Situation
For this project, we are partnering up with the IT company Improving to come up with strategies to improve upon their current Balanced ScoreCard. This can be anything from finding better ways to measure success within the four disciplines to displaying their metrics in a new and innovative way to gain deeper insights.

 

Tasks

  • Learn the basics of the Balanced ScoreCard

  • Research Applications of the Balanced ScoreCard

  • Evaluated how Improving uses the Balanced ScoreCard

  • Conduct Rapid Ideation for ways to Improve the Balanced Score Card
